The Real Man Inside:
How Men Can Recover Their Identity and Why Women Can't Help
by Verne Becker (Zondervan, 1992, hardcover)
A personal and open-mindedly Christian exploration of men's issues as raised by Robert Bly, Sam Keen, and others. Describes the growing phenomenon of male passivity in our culture, shows possible ways for men to live more actively and consciously, and emphasizes the need for men to do this work on their own, without relying on women.

God's Call
by Brother Andrew with Verne Becker (Chosen Books, 2002, paperback)
A follow-up narrative to God's Smuggler, which has sold more than 10 million copies since its publication in 1967. God's Call describes the famous Dutch Bible smuggler's activities since then, and shows how his ministry has (and hasn't) changed with the fall of the Iron Curtain and the breakup of the Soviet Union. Originally published in hardcover as The Calling in 1996, and in paperback, with an extra chapter updating Brother Andrew's ministry, as For the Love of My Brothers in 1998.

The Calling: A Challenge to Walk the Narrow Road
by Brother Andrew with Verne Becker (Chosen Books, 2002, paperback)
Youth edition of God's Call, which includes updated information on Brother Andrew and the ministry of his organization, Open Doors. Also provides statistics about countries where the church faces persecution, and anecdotes from young people who have traveled to these areas.

Quiet Strength
by Rosa Parks with Gregory J. Reed (Zondervan, 1995, hardcover)
Rosa Parks became the mother of the civil rights movement in 1955 by refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated bus. This book is a collection of her thoughts, recollections, and insights as she looks back on a distinguished life of quiet activism. I was called in by Zondervan to perform a complete overhaul of the manuscript, which included major restructuring, line editing, and some rewriting. My goal was to improve readability and create a logical organizational structure while preserving Mrs. Parks's simple eloquence.
Aim High: An Olympic Decathlete's Inspiring Story
by Dave Johnson with Verne Becker (Zondervan, 1994, hardcover; March 1996, paperback)
Autobiography of Dave Johnson, known to millions as half of Reebok's classic "Dan and Dave" campaign prior to the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. Here he sets forth his athletic and spiritual journey, the roots of his fierce competitive drive, and the God-given inner strength that made it possible for him to earn a bronze medal in Barcelona on a broken foot.

Tough Parenting for Dangerous Times
by Andy Bustanoby with Verne Becker (Zondervan, 1992, paper; HarperCollins, 1995, mass paper)
Addresses the fear of many parents that their kids "won't turn out right." Often these parents jump into the everyday conflicts of their children too quickly and therefore prevent the children from learning their own lessons. Stresses the importance of allowing one's children to experience the consequences of their actions and choices (as well as the pain, within limits) in order to build their character and inner strength.

Unfolding Destinies
by Olive Fleming Liefeld (Zondervan, 1991, trade paper)
Olive is the widow of Pete Fleming, one of the missionaries who, along with Jim Elliot, was martyred by the Auca Indians in the early 1950s. Olive had remained silent about the tragedy until this book, which gives a more raw, down-to-earth view of the events leading up to the massacre. She also discovered startling new information that gives a whole new twist to the tragedy. I served as editor, rewriter, and occasional writer.

Love Broke Through
by Thomas B. Stribling with Verne Becker (Zondervan, 1990, trade paper)
The true story of a Methodist minister who left his New York City church, his wife and his daughter for a promiscuous homosexual lifestyle. Eventually he contracted AIDS, but through the love of his family, his daughter and Christian friends, he recommitted his life to God and devoted the final two years of his life to ministering to other hospitalized AIDS patients in New York.
